Wakame
Scientific Name: Undaria pinnatifida
Description: Wakame is a highly invasive brown algae that originates in north-east Asia but that has become well established in nearby Port Phillip Bay. It competes with and can replace native kelp species and spreads easily.
It can be recognised by its frilly base where spores are produced and a thick rib down the blade in mature pants.
While not present at the Bluff at the time of writing, if seen this species should be reported as soon as possible, as once established, it is very difficult to eradicate. If sighted this should be immediately reported to Parks Victoria or to marine.pests@agriculture.vic.gov.au.
Type: Brown Algae
