Cordgrass

Scientific Name: Spartina anglica
Type: Invasive pest

Description: Cordgrass is a highly invasive estuarine grass that originates from Europe. It has been found in small patches within the Barwon estuary and lower Lake Connewarre, as well as other parts of Victoria. Its tall leaves arise in clumps from a persistent perennial root system.

Spartina grows extremely well in mudflats and can spread to cover large areas, changing the entire ecosystem excluding many native species.

If seen, Cordgrass should be reported to Parks Victoria or Barwon Coast.
