Bottlenose Dolphin

Scientific Name: Tursiops truncatus

Description: Smaller whales such as the Bottlenose Dolphin are also seen around Barwon Heads and 13th Beach. These animals have rows of pointed teeth and use echolocation to assist in locating food such as squid and fish.

Recent genetic studies have suggested that local Bottlenose Dolphins may be a separate species called the Burrunan Dolphin Tursiops australis.
