Swamp Harrier

Species Name: Circus approximans

Description: A large raptor often seen gliding over the Bluff, Lake Murtnaghurt or along the estuary. Swamp Harriers feed on carrion, small fish, birds, lizards and other small animals. Their keen eyesight allows them to detect subtle movements below and drop down to strike. Adults have a white rump that helps identification. Nesting occurs in dense reed beds.
