Smooth Pebble Crab

Scientific Name: Philyra laevis

Description: The Smooth Pebble Crab is a common scavenger found on sheltered intertidal sand flats and amongst seagrass in the Barwon estuary, and are often found feeding on the carcasses of other marine animals. Their rounded bodies make them easy to distinguish. The long claws of the males are used in defense and feeding and are also useful for holding onto suitable females prior to mating.
