Sand Crab
Scientific Name: Ovalipes australiensis
Wadarurrung Name: wordel
Description: These large crabs live in sand off beaches where they scavenge for dead animals and plants. They are able to bury themselves rapidly into the sand by digging backwards when disturbed, leaving only their stalked eyes poking up into the water above.
The hind legs of these crabs are distinctly flattened allowing them to swim short distances. They also have two distinctive false eye spots at the rear of their shells.
