VISION

A healthy coast and marine environment that is respected, enjoyed and cared for by all.

MISSION
To facilitate involvement in conserving Victoria's natural and cultural coast and marine environment.

Key features of the Coast Action/Coastcare Community Program:

  • Works with local groups and individuals
  • Encourages community to address problems of coastal degradation and to become actively involved in coastal management
  • Provides funds for a range of coastal and marine projects
Coast Action/Coastcare has been operating in Victoria since 1994/95 and is jointly funded by the Department of Sustainability and Environment and the Commonwealth Government.

Community Participation:

Coast Action/Coastcare helps Victorian's to protect, restore and enhance the coast by:

SUPPORT - provide funding and advice for coast and marine projects.
INVOLVE - encourage and assist community participation in coastal protection and restoration.
FACILITATE - encourage networks and links between the community and land management agencies to help manage the coast.
EDUCATE - promote coastal awareness through educational activities and events. Provide skill development and training for community groups and land managers.

     

Education Programs:

The "Summer By The Sea" program is conducted annually along the coast of Victoria. In January 2003 the program attracted over 25,000 participants to a range of free activities, including:

 
  • rockpool rambles
  • guided walks and talks
  • canoe trips
  • estuary and wetland adventures
  • snorkelling, and many more
 

The activities are designed to encourage responsible use of the coast, educate about issues and impacts on the coast, and offer opportunities for individuals to become involved in coastal and marine management.

Other educational programs and activities include:

  • Coastcare Week(first week in December)
  • World Environment Day
  • Sea Week
  • Various Festivals and events (eg. Festival of the Sea)
  • Displays
  • Community seminars, workshops and training.

Community Grants:

One of the key components of the Coast Action/Coastcare program is to support coastal and marine projects through funding opportunities. The Community Support Grants Program provides community groups with up to $3000 per year to undertake a range of projects (as listed above). Support funding may also be used for groups wishing to attend training courses or conferences to improve their knowledge and understanding of the coast and marine environments.

Other grant programs supported by Coast Action/Coastcare include:
· Envirofund,
· NHT 2 Regional Grants Program (coordinated through local Coastal Management Authorities)

Coastal Facilitators:

Coast Action / Coastcare have 7 regional facilitators located throughout Victoria to assist community groups and land managers.
