Sand is transported along the coast by coastal currents called 'longshore drift'. Particles of sand are deposited on beaches by the waves. During the quieter months of the year, the beaches can grow in size and sand blows back into the dunes. Winter storms can also easily carry large amounts of sand away overnight.
