Worms / Terebellid Worm tentacles

There are more than 1000 species of worms found in marine and coastal environments in Victoria . Most of them are rarely noticed but there are some species that form massive colonies such as the tube worm Galeolaria.
Many worms live in sand, rubble, or even in crevices in rocks. They are an important group that often recycle dead materials and are in turn an food source for many species from fish to birds.

Terrebellid Worms have large segmented bodies which are normally buried in sediment or as in this case hidden in a crack in the rock. Their long sticky tentacles stick to particles of food, which then move along narrow mucous filled grooves to the mouth.
