Chitons are considered to be a very primitive mollusc, having a distinctive protective armour consisting of eight seperate, usually overlapping plates or valves held in position by a circular muscular girdle. They are adapted to live on hard rock surfaces and when disturbed clamp themselves tightly down by a large muscular foot. They can live up to twenty years or more.
