Mollusca / Cephalopods / Blue Ringed Octopus

blue ring octopus

Phylum: Mollusca
Class: Cephalopoda
Species: Hapalochlaena maculosa

A relatively common yet rarely seen animal on southern Australia's rocky shores, the Blue Ringed Octopus is notable because of its powerful venom, capable of killing humans. Generally a timid animal, the Blue Ringed Octopus hides in crevices during the day emerging mainly at night to hunt out crabs. It only grows to a length of 12 cm.

Care should always be taken to avoid accidental encounters by always watching where hands are going in rockpools.
