White-faced Heron

Egretta novae-hollandiae - White-faced Heron
Sometimes mis-named the Blue Crane, this is a common inhabitant of wetlands, tidal estuaries and occasionally rocky reefs. It feeds by stalking and stabbing at small fish, crustaceans, frogs and other aquatic fauna. In early spring it builds flat stick nest in a tall tree and raises up to five or six young. It is a resident species seen here throughout the year.
