Little Pied Cormorant

Pharlacrocorax melanoleucos - Little Pied Cormorant
Often noted perched on the rock platforms, or more often on pier structures or moored boats, it feeds mainly on crustaceans and small fish it pursues underwater. Cormorants control buoyancy deliberately water-logging their plumage and are more vulnerable to chill than most other seabirds. After feeding for about half an hour, they fly to a perch where they dry, re-waterproof their feathers and warm-up, before returning to the water. Cormorants usually breed in large colonies, none of which are found near Geelong, but occasionally small colonies develop locally e.g. Lake Lorne at Drysdale.
