| One of three ibis species in Australia, it is the most closely associated with coastal ecosystems and tidal mudflats. With its long, curved beak, it is well able to probe deeply into estuarine silt for worms, crustaceans and other invertebrates, but frogs, fish and small reptiles are also eaten. There are several breeding sites close to Barwon Heads, the largest on Mud Islands where thousands of birds nest alongside the Straw-necked Ibis, gulls, terns and other species. |
