(below left) The general store in 1937 run by Mr Fred Bartlett, who sold everything from needle and thread to gasoline. The shop still stands and is the local newsagent as it was then.
(above right) Typical street scene during the 1940's and 1950's. The cypress trees, planted in 1918, are fondly remembered by many visitors. But the they were removed in 1964, as the roots were undermining the road and footpaths, as well as being a fire hazard in the summer.
(right) Students and teacher in 1899 of what was then the Conneware East School 1574, later to move to 2 other locations and become Barwon Heads Primary School.
(left) Until 1927, the only way to cross the river to Ocean Grove was by ferry and local ferryman Mr Abenathy would row you across for six pence.

(right) The Members of the Great Ocean Road Trust on the steps of the Geelong town hall in 1918.
The Great Ocean Road starts at the bridge in Barwon Heads and continues through to  Warrnambool.
Mr Howard Hitchcock, a resident of Barwon Heads was the first chairman as well as a leading proponent of the project.
