left) The general store in 1937 run by Mr Fred Bartlett, who sold
everything from needle and thread to gasoline. The shop still stands
and is the local newsagent as it was then.

right) Typical street scene during the 1940's and 1950's. The cypress
trees, planted in 1918, are fondly remembered by many visitors. But
the they were removed in 1964, as the roots were undermining the road
and footpaths, as well as being a fire hazard in the summer.

Ocean Grove was by ferry and local ferryman Mr Abenathy would row

The Great Ocean Road starts at the bridge in Barwon Heads and
continues through to Warrnambool.
Mr Howard Hitchcock, a resident of Barwon Heads was the first chairman
as well as a leading proponent of the project.
